Jess’s love affair with photography began in his teens in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains where he was raised in a family firmly rooted in the ranching life of the west. This early passion for being in the outdoors with a camera lead to his doing reconnaissance photography for various US government agency’s during his early 20’s while serving in the military . For over the next 30 years Jess balanced, running a stock photography business, serving as staff photographer on several magazines, raising a family and a career in the communication industry . However, in 1999 intense desire drew Jess out of his commercial roots and deep into the heat and soul of nature and the hertiage of the west. Jess stepped away from the hectic corporate world and into a place that transformed his spirt. Being in the midst of the wilderness renewed him. It was time to give meaning and purpose for himself , his western hertage and his wildlife partners. Jess has learned the nuances and habits of his beloved wildlife companions as they enteract together in their natural environment. Jess’s work serves as an homage to the beauty that surrounds us, and gives celebration to our remarkable wilderness areas. Often times referred to as “visual poetry”, Jess’s images truly intensifies what is wild and free Jess’s photos have appeared in many diverse publications from Paris Match, National Geographic, Defenders of Wildlife, Audubon, Wilderness, National Parks, Sports Afield, Sierra Magazine and Smithsonian, among others. He has also contributed to several regional magazines and newspapers Today, while a couple of book projects on endangered places are progressing, much of his work is used by advertising clients from industries as varied as Automotive, Banking and Sporting goods.. Equipment Photo Equipment, gear,toys whatever you
call it, most photographers are more interested it the hardware of the
business than any single aspect. Ok I've said it
STUFF RULES!!
Enough of my ramblings you are here to see what I use, so here it is;
Arca Swiss 4x5 with lens of 75,110,150,210,300,360 and 500 mm. Filters (Mostly split ND'S)and other large format goodies like focusing loupe by toyo light meter by pentax and custom tee shirt dark cloth. 35 mm currently by Canon, I shot Nikon from the Ftn up to the f5. Then came along Image Stabilization, I haven't looked back. 1D MK lV, 1DS MKIII, 7D, (Instant feedback) Lens, 16-35, 20, 24-105, 24 T-S, 45 ts-e, 90ts-e, 70-200 is, 200 f1.8, 300 f4, 100-400 4.5, 500 f4, 600 f4, converters, flashes, beamers,Arca Kirk and wimberly heads, Gitzo tripods.
All together pretty normal stuff except 200 f 1.8. I had the 300 f 2.8 IS but with the 200 and canon converters the 300 was seldom used. The most important piece of equipment I own is an alarm clock. Be there early and plan to stay late. Remember "it's all
about the light" Images and design protected by U.S.
